Kungliga Operan is Sweden’s national stage for opera and ballet, founded by Gustav III in 1773. Its performances range from classical masterpieces to newly written productions. The company is home to vocal soloists, the Royal Swedish Opera Chorus and the Royal Swedish Ballet. The opera says the ballet company is Sweden’s only classical ballet company and one of the world’s oldest. Its orchestra, Kungliga Hovkapellet, was founded in 1526 and is among the world’s oldest. The venue describes its offer as being for adults and children, with opera and ballet bringing strong emotions, tulle, pointe shoes and tragedy.

Visit Stockholm says Kungliga Operan also arranges guided tours. Visitors can go behind the stage, enter the royal rooms and look down into the orchestra pit. The tours cover the building’s history and give an account of backstage work today. Visit Stockholm points to the roles of a blacksmith and a prompter as examples of what visitors may learn about. The tour description presents this as a way to see the opera house and learn about work there beyond the stage.

Opera: Tosca

23 Oct to 16 Nov · Kungliga Operan

Deadly drama, sparkling singing and classic stage design. During a dramatic 24 hours we follow the three main characters in a story of life and death, accompanied by surgingly beautiful music, in a classic performance. Tosca is the opera that has it all, here produced with a grand set design, a large chorus and some of the best loved duets in operatic history.

Young Opera: Lost

24 Oct to 28 Nov · Kungliga Operan

"The opera is simply a little gem – lucky are those who manage to secure a ticket!” wrote Dagens Nyheter after the 2024 premiere. Now, Lost (Vilse) is finally back! Lost is a whimsical dream play that is reminiscent of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with music by Andrea Tarrodi – one of our most acclaimed contemporary Swedish composers. Its 2024 première proved popular with critics and audiences of all ages. This is a truly great musical experience in a small format.

Vilka låtar var det som fick håren på armarna att resa sig? Vad sa Evert Taube när han ringde? Det är där vi är när ridån går upp. TYCK om mig eller Tyck OM mig! Välkomna till mer än bara en konsert!
