At Kungliga Operan, Mozart’s Così fan tutte turns a test of romantic fidelity into a story of disguises and desire. Don Alfonso argues that anyone could be unfaithful under the right circumstances. Two young men disagree, insisting their girlfriends would never betray them, and make a contract with the philosopher to put the sisters’ loyalty to the test over one day.
With help from the women’s maid, Despina, the men disguise themselves as strangers and court their own girlfriends. The sisters first reject the advances, but both are eventually drawn to one of the disguised men. The deception ends with a staged wedding and the men revealing who they are. Visit Stockholm describes the opera as playful, with darkness at its core, and points to Mozart’s ingeniously crafted music. It will suit visitors drawn to opera built around romantic relationships, mistaken identities and a test that ensnares everyone involved.
