The Art of Noh: Talk and Demonstration
The talk and demonstrations show how Noh masks, fans and costumes work within a Japanese theatre tradition dating back to the 14th century.

Noh actors from Kyoto, led by Michiharu Wakebayashi, will explain the form’s origins and history and how it has been passed down. The event pairs their talk with a curator’s introduction to the Museum of Ethnography’s Noh mask collection. A demonstration shows how masks, fans and costumes are used, and includes a short Noh dance and time for audience questions.
Noh combines singing, dance and musical accompaniment with carved masks and elegant costumes. It is a highly stylized theatre form that has been performed in Japan since the 14th century and was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. The speakers also include Koji Hashimoto and Hiromichi Tamoi. The event is in Japanese and English.
