The Yokai exhibition follows Japanese supernatural creatures from Edo-period art into modern popular culture. Yokai have been loved and feared for hundreds of years. During the Edo period (1603–1868), Japan closed itself to the outside world and its culture flourished; yokai shifted from frightening and unsettling figures to entertainment and art.
Visitors can see works by Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, Kyosai, Yoshitoshi, Sekien and Kunisada, including Edo-period woodcuts and scroll paintings. The exhibition asks which features of these depictions remain recognisable in yokai today. The creatures also appear in video games, films and manga, linking older images with modern popular culture. That makes the exhibition relevant to visitors curious about Japanese art and folklore.
