Treacherous Ice – More Drowning Accidents
Eight people lost their lives in drowning accidents during the month of February, and a total of twelve people have drowned during the first two months of the year. This can be compared to two people during the period of January-February last year.
More people died in drowning accidents last year
Last year, 90 people lost their lives in drowning accidents, according to the Swedish Lifesaving Society. This is a significant increase compared to previous years – but fewer than the average during the 2000s.
The trend is broken: Drownings have stopped decreasing
The decrease in fatal drowning accidents has stalled – and children and young people with non-Swedish origin run almost seven times higher risk of drowning than those with Swedish origin. This is shown by a new study from the National Board of Forensic Medicine.
Things to Consider Before Venturing Out on the Ice
To venture out onto the ice at this time of year can be a matter of life and death, and the unpredictable weather requires careful preparation. If you're alone, it's extremely difficult for most people to get back up, and then you'll freeze to death, says Jan Insulander, project leader at the Ice Safety Council.
