"Three of the last four years have been between 70 and 77 drownings, so the figure of 90 worries us. At the same time, if we raise our gaze, we see a downward trend over time", says Mikael Olausson, Secretary General of the Swedish Lifesaving Society in a press release.
Since 2000, the average has been 106 fatalities per year. As in previous years, bathing accidents are the most common type of drowning accident, and older men are heavily overrepresented.
Of those who died last year, 64 were men, five boys, eleven women, and two girls. In eight cases, the gender is unknown.
The most drowning accidents, 16, occurred in Stockholm, followed by Bohuslän and Göteborg County with 14.
The summer months were the most accident-prone months last year, with July standing out with 19 fatalities.
The Swedish Lifesaving Society's compilation is preliminary.
