Eight people lost their lives in drowning accidents during the month of February, and a total of twelve people have drowned during the first two months of the year. This can be compared to two people during the period of January-February last year.
The number of ice accidents is higher than in recent years, which is largely due to the fact that the ice has been treacherous around the country, according to the Swedish Lifesaving Society, which is urging caution.
"The ice is still on our lakes in large parts of the country and a safe ice can become an unsafe ice in just a few hours", says the society's general secretary Mikael Olausson in a press release.
