Lidingö’s Controversial ‘Russian House’ Handed Back to Owner After Two Decades of Legal Battles

After more than two decades of legal wrangling, the controversial so-called “Russian house” on Lidingö, outside Stockholm, has been handed over to its owner.

The battle over the property, which was originally owned by Russia, began as early as 2003. The dispute was over whether the apartment building could be sold through an enforcement action to settle a German businessman's claim against the Russian state.

After years of legal battles, LKO Fastighets AB was able to buy the building in 2014. But that wasn't the end of it: Russian embassy staff continued to live there without paying rent or allowing the owner in.

Now SVT News reports that the Russian residents have left and that, for the first time in twelve years, the owner has been allowed to enter the property.

We have been fighting for this for a long time, he says.
