Rwanda first to introduce mpox vaccine in Africa
Vaccination against the mpox virus has begun in Africa – with Rwanda first out, with several hundred people in the risk zone having been vaccinated, according to the African Union's public health agency Africa CDC. The first 300 vaccines were distributed near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has been the hardest-hit country with nearly 22,000 cases and over 700 deaths linked to the virus between January and August this year.
Danish company increases production of mpox vaccine
The Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic is to expand its production of the company's vaccine against mpox, the infectious disease previously known as monkeypox. The company writes in a press release that it has the capacity to produce an additional ten million doses by 2025, in addition to current orders.
Health Emergency Declared After Outbreak of Mpox
The African Union's health organization Africa CDC declared a health emergency on the continent on Tuesday due to the widespread outbreak of mpox on the continent. Mpox outbreaks have occurred in several African countries, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
