"Since the Ebola outbreak was declared, we have been demanding payment for our work," says Biensi Kano, a doctor at the epidemiological surveillance committee in Ituri, one of the hardest-hit provinces in the country.
In addition to unpaid wages, healthcare workers are also complaining about a lack of equipment. According to the Africa CDC, more than 100 healthcare workers have been infected with the disease, 35 of whom have died, since the outbreak began in mid-May.
The ongoing outbreak is the fastest-growing to date, according to the Africa CDC. So far, more than 600 people have died and 1,759 people have been confirmed infected, according to figures from the WHO.
