"Never before have so many cases been reported so soon after an Ebola outbreak was identified," said Deputy Director Alan Gonzalez in a statement on Saturday.
Since the outbreak in mid-May, at least 246 deaths have been confirmed, according to the African Union's disease control agency, Africa CDC.
“The reality is that no one knows the true extent and severity of this outbreak. New suspected cases are being reported daily, while hundreds of samples have yet to be tested,” Gonzalez said.
The organization warns that obstacles such as closed borders and airports are leading to continued delays in getting medical equipment, humanitarian aid and highly skilled personnel.
