The WHO director says on the trip that the spread of the Ebola virus "can be stopped," but does not advocate a travel ban in the region, saying "it doesn't make much difference."
After meetings in the capital Kinshasa, the WHO chief will travel to the affected Ituri region in the northeast of the country. The trip was scheduled for Friday, but has been postponed by a day.
The African Union's disease control agency, Africa CDC, reports 1,077 suspected cases, with 246 deaths, since the outbreak was confirmed in May. The WHO is continuously updating its figures for suspected and confirmed cases and says 223 suspected deaths are under investigation.
