residence permit
Permission from Migrationsverket for a person from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland to live in Sweden. There are permits for work, studies, living with family, research, protection and other grounds, and most are time-limited and must be extended before they expire.
Your permit is shown on a residence permit card (UT-kort). It decides what you may do here: a work permit is often tied to a particular employer and job, and a study permit to your studies.
EU/EEA citizens do not need a residence permit; they have a right of residence (uppehållsrätt) if they meet its conditions. Many permit rules changed during 2026, so always read Migrationsverket's page for your permit type.
