folkbokföring

population registration

The Swedish population register, kept by Skatteverket, which records who lives where along with name, date of birth, civil status and address. Being registered (folkbokförd) is what gives you a personnummer, and it is the starting point for tax, healthcare, school places, benefits and the right to vote in local elections.

In most cases you should be registered if you move here and plan to live here for one year or more. You report the move with Skatteverket's Moving to Sweden e-service, which is available in English, and may be asked to visit a service centre.

You must also report when you move within Sweden or leave the country, so that the register stays correct.

You will meet it at
