A Swedish identity card that proves who you are in shops, banks, pharmacies and at Systembolaget. Two kinds exist. The national ID card from the Police is for Swedish citizens. The ID card Skatteverket has issued is for anyone in the population register with a personnummer, whatever their citizenship.

To get Skatteverket's card you book an appointment at a service centre that issues ID cards, pay the application fee first, and bring proof of your identity.

This is changing: from 1 December 2026 new ID cards of this kind are applied for with the Police instead. Cards already issued stay valid for the time printed on them.
