trängselskatt

congestion tax

A charge on Swedish-registered and foreign vehicles driving into and out of central Stockholm, on Essingeleden, and in Gothenburg, on weekdays during set hours. Each passage costs an amount that depends on the time of day, up to a daily maximum.

In Stockholm the amounts are higher in a peak season in spring and autumn. No tax is charged on public holidays, some days before them, or most of July. Cameras register your number plate and the bill is sent to the vehicle's owner; there are no booths to pay at.

The hours and amounts for each city are on Transportstyrelsen's website.
