Systembolaget

The state-owned chain of shops that is the only retailer allowed to sell strong beer, wine and spirits to the public. Supermarkets only sell weaker drinks. Swedes often just say Systemet or bolaget.

You must be 20 to buy at Systembolaget, although the age at bars and restaurants is 18, and staff may ask for ID from you and from the people with you. Shops are closed on Sundays and on most public holidays, close early on some eves, and stay open longer in the days before big holidays.

You can also order to a shop or for home delivery. Check the holiday opening hours before Easter, Midsummer and Christmas.
