What it is: a state-owned company with a monopoly on retail sales of strong beer, wine and spirits. You must be 20 to buy, and staff may ask for ID from anyone, including the people you are with.

Where people get stuck: shops are closed on Sundays and on most public holidays, including Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve, and close early on some eves. Check the holiday opening hours before a long weekend.
