grundskola

compulsory school

Compulsory school, which lasts nine years and is free of charge, usually from the year a child turns seven until 16. Before it comes a year of preschool class (förskoleklass). Each school year has an autumn and a spring term.

All children registered in Sweden have the right and the duty to go to school. Municipalities run most schools, but you can also choose an independent school (friskola), which is free as well and may have its own admission rules such as queues.

After compulsory school most young people go on to upper secondary school (gymnasium). Term dates and school holidays are set by each municipality.
