friskola

independent school

A school run by a company, foundation or association rather than by the municipality, but paid for by the state through a school voucher that follows each pupil. Independent schools are free for families, follow the same national curriculum and are inspected in the same way as municipal schools.

They can have their own admission rules, often a queue based on the date you registered, so many parents sign up their children years in advance. Some international schools in Sweden are independent schools.

Independent schools set their own term dates and holidays, which can differ from the municipality's.
