This year, 191 municipalities, or 66 percent, restrict private individuals' use of fireworks with local regulations. This is an increase of 25 percent since 2021, according to figures from Djurens rätt, which maps municipalities in its so-called "pain list" every year.
Private initiatives for firework-fearful dogs also seem to be increasing.
My feeling is that public opinion has shifted on the issue, people are talking more about how negatively it affects animals, and therefore the supply of quiet zones has also increased, says Janina Pfalzar, press officer at the Swedish Kennel Club.
About a third of all dogs in Sweden are firework-fearful and for about 35,000 it is so bad that they need calming medication, according to figures from the Swedish Kennel Club. At Apoteket Hjärtat, sales of calming medication for dogs are ten times higher during the New Year's week compared to a normal week.
The sales increase can also be linked to the fact that there is a neutering boom in Sweden, according to Janina Pfalzer.
Neutering increases fear in dogs. When testosterone decreases, they become more easily frightened.
If you can't get to a quiet zone with your dog on New Year's Eve, you can instead lock yourself in a room, pull down the blinds, and turn on the tumble dryer.
I also try to teach my dogs to associate fireworks with something positive, so they get treats every time it bangs, says Janina Pfalzer.
