Already by the end of next year, the theater will be on the brink of financial collapse, according to AFP. The only alternative to bankruptcy is "an enormous restructuring and downsizing that would mean losing what the theater stands for", says Schaubühne, which has already closed an experimental stage to reduce costs.

Schaubühne was founded in 1962 and has been led by director Thomas Ostermeier since 1999, who has made several guest appearances at Dramaten in Stockholm over the years. Last year, he directed Lena Endre in the monologue "Vox humana".

Berlin's cultural scene is now fighting against a 12 percent reduction in the cultural budget. In total, this amounts to approximately 1.5 billion kronor. Berlin's Minister of Culture, Joe Chialo (CDU), explained earlier in the week to local media that he is still negotiating to reduce the savings. At the same time, the cultural scene is struggling with high rent increases.
