Wall Street ended the year in the red

This year's last trading day in the USA was marked by red curves and one or two falling rockets. The country's hyped tech sector can look back on a year with major upswings – but on New Year's Eve, it didn't go well for the giants.

The US stock market's larger indexes ended both the trading day and the year in the red. The Dow Jones fell by 0.1 percent, while the Nasdaq composite index dropped by 0.9 percent. The S&P 500 closed at minus 0.4 percent.

The mentioned technology companies within the so-called "magnificent seven" have all seen significant increases during 2024. Particularly good has the year been for the semiconductor company Nvidia and electric car giant Tesla, which have risen by approximately 179 and 62 percent, respectively. On Tuesday, however, both companies fell significantly, with a decline of 3.3 percent for Tesla and 2.3 percent for Nvidia.

The remaining companies in the group also ended the day in the red. Microsoft fell by 0.8 percent, Apple by 0.7 percent, Google owner Alphabet by 1.2 percent, Facebook owner Meta by 1.0 percent, and Amazon by 0.9 percent.

One of the day's winners was pharmaceutical company Moderna, which has otherwise had a tough 2024 behind it. During the year, the company has fallen by more than 60 percent, but on New Year's Eve, the stock saw an increase of 5.6 percent.

Sports giant Nike also got a good end to the year with a stock increase of 1.4 percent.

Overall, the US stock markets can look back on a strong year, with two-digit increases. The Nasdaq composite index rose by around 30 percent, while the Dow Jones rose by around 13 percent. The S&P 500 climbed by approximately 23 percent.
