The American Justice Department is suing Tiktok for illegally collecting data about children. According to the department, Tiktok's parent company, Chinese Bytedance, is violating the online child privacy legislation.
According to federal law, apps and websites targeting children must have parental consent to collect information about children under 13 years old.
The lawsuit was filed on Friday after the American competition authority investigated and rejected Tiktok's compliance with the law. Tiktok is also accused of sharing data with, among others, Meta's Facebook.
The US Justice Department has previously accused Tiktok of collecting and storing sensitive information on servers in China, which Bytedance has denied.
