The US also opposes, according to two other sources, the writings in a forthcoming G7 statement being prepared for the three-year anniversary on February 24. It's about writings that condemn Russia as the aggressor and the aggressive party in Ukraine.
The UN resolution being prepared is expected to be put to a vote in the General Assembly on the three-year anniversary of the Russian invasion. The G7 statement being prepared follows the resolutions tabled in support of Ukraine since 2022, with writings that the US has so far backed.
In the draft resolution, Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity are reaffirmed, along with demands for Russia to withdraw its troops. So far, around 50 countries have said they will support it. A total of 193 countries in the General Assembly can consider how to vote right up until the vote.
Earlier, the US has consistently supported such resolutions, in support of a just peace in Ukraine, says one of the diplomatic sources.
