Up on shaky Wall Street

Leading index on Wall Street rose after a volatile day in New York.

The large companies on the Dow Jones industrial index turned up after yesterday's losses. The index advanced 0.4 percent.

The broad S&P 500 index and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index were down for much of the day, but turned up late in the session and closed both up 0.2 percent.

The so-called meme stock Gamestop, a video game retail chain, fell 5.4 percent after yesterday's surge of 21.0 percent.
