"President Trump was informed earlier today by the intelligence service about real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him, in an attempt to destabilize and create chaos in the USA", says Trump's campaign manager Steven Cheung in the statement.
The campaign staff does not want to elaborate further. It is still unclear whether the statement refers to new information about threats directed at Trump, or if it concerns previously reported threats.
"Officials from all authorities are working to ensure that President Trump is protected and that the election is free from interference", the statement continues.
Iran has denied allegations of involvement in threats earlier.
Days after the assassination attempt on Trump in July, when an armed man opened fire at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, American media reported that authorities had received intelligence about an alleged Iranian plot against Trump. Iran then dismissed the accusations, which they considered "malicious". One person died in the shooting and Trump was injured in the ear. The shooter's motives are unknown.
The USA has also accused Iran of being behind a cyberattack on Donald Trump's presidential election campaign.
