This is the first deadly violence since the ceasefire agreement in mid-July.
Fighting broke out on Sunday between government forces and local groups around Tal Hadid, a strategic highland area in the Druze-dominated Sweida. Three soldiers from the Syrian security forces and a local fighter have been killed, reports SOHR. The area around the town of Thaala was also hit by shelling and explosions.
There have been tensions in Sweida since the bloody clashes in July between Druze and Sunni Muslim Bedouins, which according to SOHR claimed over 1,400 lives. The government has since blocked roads to the province and hindered aid deliveries from reaching their destination.
Residents of the province have protested against the siege and demanded that government forces withdraw. The UN has managed to deliver some aid, but the humanitarian corridor from Jordan is now closed.
The government has said that it will investigate the violence in Sweida in July, and a committee responsible for the investigation held its first meeting on Saturday.
