"The next step is to analyze which measures provide the greatest benefit at the lowest cost in order to get started as soon as possible with the necessary work," says Joel Smith, infrastructure director at the Swedish Maritime Administration, and Anders Dahl, CEO of Luleå Port, in a press release.
The ongoing procurement of a quay for the new deep-sea port is also being interrupted.
Last summer, approximately 1.5 million cubic meters were dredged in the harbor area.
The billion-kronor project had 2028 as its deadline. It was initiated as early as 2014 and is now at risk of being delayed. The deepening and widening of the fairway will enable cargo ships with a draft of up to 15 meters to traffic the port.
The goal of the initiative is to increase the transport capacity of the port due to increased ore production in mines in northern Sweden and Finland.
