Today, 26.5 million cigarettes and 18 tons of tobacco are going up in smoke in Copenhagen.
This is the largest tobacco destruction ever in Denmark, according to the Danish Tax Authority, which is behind the blaze at the waste incineration plant on Amager Bakke.
The cigarettes and tobacco originate from a raid on an illegal cigarette factory. The destruction is taking place since several people were sentenced to long prison terms in February in connection with the case.
The factory in Aulum on Jutland is said to have produced and distributed cigarettes worth hundreds of millions. Just what is being burned is said to be worth around 80 million Danish kronor.
