The morning after M23 took control of the million-city, the streets were filled with people trying to leave the city, and others who were looting and filling sacks with everything they could find.
Most residents, however, are waiting in their homes, shocked by the burned bodies lying on the streets, writes AP.
Among other things, video clips on social media show how factories in the area are being looted and how prisons are being emptied.
It's shameful. Some residents have fallen victim to stray bullets. Even some soldiers who are still in the city are heavily involved in these looting, says a 25-year-old resident to the news agency.
A few weeks ago, M23 and Rwandan soldiers took control of the city of Goma and have since advanced southwards. According to the UN, nearly 3,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands have been displaced in eastern Congo since the turn of the year.
