Wisdom is now brooding what is estimated to be her 60th egg.
The record bird recently returned to the wildlife reserve on Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, which she has used for brooding since 2006. This was announced by the regional branch of the US Federal Fish and Wildlife Service FWS in a Facebook post.
In previous years, she has always made an entrance together with her partner Akeakama. Laysan albatrosses usually stick to one partner for life. However, Akeakama has not been seen in recent years – and when Wisdom returned last week, she began interacting with a new male.
"We are optimistic that the egg will hatch", says Jonathan Plissner, responsible biologist for the wildlife reserve, in a statement.
