A snowstorm is approaching large parts of northern Norrland's inland on Saturday afternoon. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a yellow warning for snowfall from Vilhelmina in the south to Gällivare in the north.
This is the first real snowfall in the area, many people don't have winter tires and are not fully prepared, says Kristin Holmberg, meteorologist at SMHI.
A total of 10-15 centimeters of snow may fall. It is mainly the southern parts of the area that will be affected.
The largest amounts are expected in Vilhelmina, Storuman, Malå, Norsjö, and Arvidsjaur, says Kristin Holmberg.
Residents in the snow-affected areas are advised not to venture out unnecessarily and to be cautious on the roads.
Traffic may slow down due to slippery roads, snowmud, and poor visibility. There may also be limited access to roads if they have not been plowed or due to traffic accidents, for example.
The yellow warning is in effect until 2 pm on Sunday.
SMHI has three levels of weather warnings:
Yellow warning: Consequences for society, some risks for the general public.
Orange warning: Serious consequences for society, danger for the general public.
Red warning: Very serious consequences for society, great danger for the general public.
