After three years in a row of reducing consumption around Christmas, Swedes have now opened their wallets again. On average, the Christmas budget lands on 6,769 kronor, which is an increase of 13 percent compared to Christmas 2023.
This year, Swedes plan to buy Christmas gifts for 3,865 kronor, an increase of 9 percent compared to Christmas 2023. It is primarily the other Christmas expenses, such as Christmas food and Christmas trees, that have increased by 20 percent to 2,904 kronor.
Stockholm is the region where the most will be spent on Christmas, 7,380 kronor, which is 9 percent more than the average. Southern Sweden is the region where the least will be spent. The figures come from Nordea's Christmas survey, which was conducted by Verian.
According to Anders Stenkrona, private economist at Nordea, the increase can be explained by the fact that inflation has slowed down and interest rates have been lowered. This means that households feel that they have more money to spend.
