Trump Raises Tariffs on India Over Russian Oil Purchases

The President of the USA, Donald Trump, has grown tired of India's purchase of Russian oil. Now he is punishing the country by "heavily raising the tariffs", Trump writes on Truth Social. India responds by calling the action "unfounded and unreasonable".

As recently as on Saturday, Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Indian export goods to the USA due to India's Russian oil purchases. This in connection with the tariff negotiations between the countries.

Highly placed sources in India stated, however, contrary to Trump's information, that the country has not stopped buying Russian oil.

Now Trump says he is making good on the threats.

"They (India) do not care about how many people are being killed in Ukraine due to Russia's warfare. Therefore, I will now significantly raise the tariffs", he writes in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

The statement is being criticized by India's Foreign Minister Randhir Jaiswal, reports the news agency AFP.

"Like all major economies, India will take all necessary measures to ensure its national interests and economic security", he writes in a statement.

The Foreign Minister further suggests that both the USA and the EU are throwing stones in a glass house, which condemns India's purchase of Russian oil while they themselves are conducting trade with Russia.
