Retailers Promote Early Potty Training to Reduce Diaper Sales

It is not possible to make a profit on diaper sales – therefore, an Ica retailer in Jämtland is now training parents in how children can become diaper-free, reports Dagligvarunytt.

For stores, there is no profitability in selling diapers, says Erik Lindgren, who runs Ica Nära in the town of Mörsil.

You can ask any store in the industry, I think everyone has the same view. We rarely sell diapers at the regular price without campaigning them to attract families with children with the result that we lose money on every diaper we sell, he says to the trade magazine.

In order to therefore be able to sell as few diapers as possible, the store has, together with the Swedish organization Omep, developed an information folder about the benefits of children becoming diaper-free early. Omep makes, among other things, potty training material for child care centers and preschools.

The folder is now placed together with the diapers in the store and Erik Lindgren hopes that others will follow.

The dream is, of course, that all stores, regardless of chain affiliation, would take a stand for this. It would mean that we would need to devote less time to unprofitable sales.
