The injuries that marked the season were under control and the OS rehearsal in Italy gave a long-awaited message of 8.01 meters.
But in Paris came the setback.
Thobias Montler did not advance to the OS final – which was his first final miss since 2015.
— There's not much to say. An extreme disappointment. It became the worst outcome it could be, he said briefly after the fiasco at Stade de France.
The 28-year-old was then on the verge of needing "to find a change and get everything to fit".
Now the long jump star has found a way forward.
He breaks with coach Yannick Tregaro and moves from Gothenburg.
"Even though this chapter now ends, I look forward with excitement to my continued efforts in athletics and the opportunities that lie ahead of me", he writes on Instagram.
Montler and Tregaro have worked together for seven years and taken five World Championship and European Championship medals.
