The Swedish Red Cross is urging its second-hand stores to stop selling clothes from the Chinese fast fashion company Shein, reports P4 Sörmland.

We have authorities warning that this contains such high levels of chemicals that it can be dangerous for both our volunteers who handle this, but not least also for customers, says the Red Cross Secretary General Ulrika Modéer to P4.

The appeal comes, among other things, after a report from Greenpeace in Germany which showed that 15 percent of the examined Shein products contained chemicals at such high levels that they are not legal in the EU.

The Swedish Chemicals Agency has, during inspections in 2023 and 2022, approved certain Shein products without comment, while finding substances exceeding permitted limits in others, including various phthalates and also traces of lead.
