British police recently stated that there were no criminal suspicions against the former BBC anchor Huw Edwards, following reports in the British newspaper The Sun in early July that he had paid a young person for images with sexual content.
But now the police are saying that they brought formal charges against Edwards at the end of June, and that the suspicions concern him having taken "indecent photographs of children", reports the public service company BBC.
The crimes are alleged to have been committed between December 2020 and April 2022, and concern images shared via the messaging service Whatsapp.
Edwards has been released on bail and is to appear in court in Westminster on Wednesday, according to BBC.
