The Lawyer after the Murder Verdict: We are Surprised

18-year-old Mohammed Mohammed is sentenced, despite his denial, to 14 years in prison for the murder in a pedestrian tunnel in Skärholmen. His defender Harri Keränen questions the verdict. We are surprised, he says.

The defender comments on the district court's decision on the way to the remand prison to meet his client.

He is very disappointed, says Keränen.

They have written a very well-formulated judgment on very many pages. It pleases me that they have made an effort and taken into account the evidence, but then we draw a different conclusion than the district court.

Keränen questions several parts.

It's about two things. The district court excludes that there were more than three people in the tunnel, but I think another judge can have a different opinion about that, he says.

Then there are statements from a co-defendant, which I think the district court has valued in a way that is not compatible with practice.

Will appeal

What do you think about the sentence?

In that he is convicted of all crimes, it's not surprising. But it's the law's strictest penalty. And here we will appeal.

It was on April 10 last year that 39-year-old Mikael was shot to death in front of his son's eyes after Mikael confronted a group of youths, including the convicted Mohammed Mohammed.

Three more people are convicted of gross shielding of a criminal, while one person is acquitted of the same crime.

At the same time, Mohammed Mohammed is convicted of several crimes committed in 2023, including two attempted murders directed at members of a rival criminal network.

Prosecutor Ove Jäverfelt welcomes the court's decision.

I am very pleased. I think it's a good judgment, it's well-motivated and it follows our line in general. There is one who is acquitted, but the evidence was weaker than against the others.

"Good from day one"

He is also pleased with the investigation that preceded the judgment.

The police work has been good from day one, where they secured at least three or four witnesses who were quite consistent and then had significance in the judgment. And we have had skilled analysts and skilled interrogators. If you have good resources and work well, it's easy to be a prosecutor.

The prosecutor emphasizes the great importance of tips from the public in this case.

We could quite easily with technical means find out how many were on the spot. But what they did there became a puzzle, and there the public's testimony was very important.
