Most recently, Aregawi competed in the national team's regime was 2015. Now she is setting her sights on making a comeback.
"I'm aiming to compete in both the upcoming European Championship and the World Championship in Japan this summer," she says in a press release.
Over the weekend, she broke the Swedish record on the half-marathon by almost two minutes in Portugal.
But a return to the national team won't happen just like that. Kajsa Bergqvist:
"First, she must meet the World Athletics criteria, which apply to all athletes returning after such a long break."
Aregawi plans to focus on 5,000 meters, both on track and road, 10,000 meters, half-marathon, and marathon.
Aregawi, now 34 years old, tested positive for doping in 2016 but was acquitted the same year.
"It's incredibly impressive to come back after such a long absence and run at such a world-class level," says Kajsa Bergqvist.
