The promise is made in a new "vision" for agriculture and food from the EU Commission.

"The roadmap we are presenting today lays out the line for handling the pressure that EU farmers are facing. It will make the sector more sustainable and help agriculture to be an attractive and profitable sector", says Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen in a press release.

Among other things, the Commission wants the EU's future agricultural policy to focus more on food production, simpler accounting rules, and better conditions in rural areas.

The vision includes, for example, a promise of a simplification package during the second quarter of the year. It also gives a hint of how the Commission wants to handle agricultural support in its proposal for the next long-term budget, which will be presented this summer.
