With 24.8 percent of the votes, the Social Democrats became the largest party in Sweden's election to the European Parliament at the beginning of June. The Moderate Party became the second largest party (17.5 percent) ahead of the Green Party (13.8) and the Sweden Democrats (13.2).
In its election analysis, the Social Democrats - who retained 5 out of 21 seats in the EU Parliament - describe their own election campaign as strong after having declined in EU elections between 1995 and 2019. A new phenomenon for the party was to have the Sweden Democrats as the main opponent in several issues.
"The EU election campaign was also an exercise for the party organization to contrast the Social Democrats against the Sweden Democrats instead of against The Moderate Party, in areas such as economy, jobs, and security", writes the Social Democrats' election analysis group in the debate article in Altinget.
