Six people have died and at least two are missing after torrential rain in the Ishikawa region in central Japan.
From Friday to late Sunday evening, the city of Wajima received 500 millimeters – half a meter of rain, reports Japan's national TV channel NHK.
According to the country's meteorological authority, another city in the region, Suzu, received 400 millimeters during the same period.
Both records are double the monthly average for September and the largest amounts measured since the measurements began.
The rains have caused rivers to overflow, as in the city of Wajima, and led to landslides in several places. People have been swept away by water masses and in landslides.
On New Year's Day 2024, an earthquake occurred in the area and the reconstruction after the event is still ongoing. People who then had their homes destroyed have now been affected by flooding in their temporary housing.
The authorities have downgraded the warnings for further rain by one level, but they remain in place.
