The man sat perched on a ledge on Elizabeth Tower, as the tower itself is called, after he had climbed over a fence and up the tower on Saturday morning. From there, he waved a Palestinian flag while a large group of people gathered below to show their support.
You're a hero! people shouted in the crowd.
The police and rescue services tried on several occasions to persuade the man to come down, but he threatened instead to climb higher.
I'll come down on my terms, said the man in a video he published on Instagram.
But after 16 hours and several mediation attempts, he was safely retrieved by the rescue services. He was arrested shortly thereafter by the police, reports AFP.
