Samuelsson close to the podium in Ruhpolding – finished fourth

It lived all the way. But in the end, Sebastian Samuelsson had to give up in the battle for the podium spots, and finished fourth in Sunday's mass start in the Biathlon World Cup. I can just as well win a day like this, he says in SVT.

Sebastian Samuelsson has been on the podium several times this season, but never highest up in an individual competition.

But after half the race during Sunday's mass start, he gave himself the opportunity. After full shooting in the first two shootings, he was part of the leading cluster.

In the third shooting, there was a miss, and instead Samuelsson focused on taking the season's third podium place individually.

And after shooting full in the last shooting, he gave himself the chance to chase Johannes Thingnes Bø for third place, twelve seconds ahead.

And he did what he could. Samuelsson took second after second, but did not manage to reach all the way. The Norwegian held off and took third place.

I thought it was unfair to chase him on the final lap now when he's doing his last season. So it was fun that he got to be on the podium again, jokes Samuelsson in SVT, regarding Thingnes Bø announcing on Saturday that he will retire.

Samuelsson finished fourth in the mass start in Ruhpolding.

Of course, with 19 hits, I want to aim a bit higher. But those ahead of me did well, he says and continues:

If you're going to miss today, you should do it in the beginning, like my Norwegian colleagues did. But it doesn't matter. It's a great competition, and I can just as well win a day like this. So it was good.

Martin Ponsiluoma opened with two misses in the first shooting and disappeared from the victory battle immediately. He finished 18th after a total of five misses.

The Italian Tommaso Giacomel won ahead of Norway's Sturla Holm Lægreid.
