One of Uganda's most prominent opposition leaders, Kizza Besigye, has been abducted in Kenya and is being held in a military prison in Uganda's capital Kampala. This is reported by his wife Winnie Byanyima, head of the UN program Unaids, on X.
According to his wife, Besigye was in Nairobi to attend the book launch of Kenyan politician Martha Karua when he was "kidnapped".
"I demand that the Ugandan government release my husband Dr. Kizza Besigye immediately", writes Winnie Byanyima on X.
The statement came after media in Uganda reported that Besigye, who has run in four presidential elections to challenge Uganda's authoritarian President Yoweri Museveni, had disappeared. Museveni has been in power since 1986.
"We, his family and his lawyers, demand to meet him. He is not a soldier. Why is he being held in a military prison?", writes Winnie Byanyima on X.
