Sigrid Hjertén's painting "The Theatre" has been sold for 20 million kronor at Uppsala Auction Chamber. This makes "The Theatre" the highest paid artwork ever created by a Swedish female artist, according to a press release from the auction chamber.
A new public record was also set during the viewing, and five bidders were active at the auction.
"The Theatre" was painted in 1915 and depicts the artist couple Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.
Sigrid Hjertén (1885-1948) is considered one of the leading colourists of modernism in Sweden. The previous record for one of her paintings was 12.7 million kronor.
