A worker in northwestern India reports that he receives approximately 20 kronor per day in hand. This is below the local minimum wage and means that workers and their families can barely afford to eat their fill, according to the survey.

At the same time, workers who extract nicotine from tobacco without protection risk chronic lung diseases.

Anette Rosengren, Nordic CEO of Swedish Match/Philip Morris, notes that the supplier in P3's investigation does not meet the requirements of Swedish companies.

For us, it's extremely important information because it will mean that we'll have to do, probably, more frequent and regular revisions, she says to the radio.

Swedish Match and British American Tobacco Sweden's nicotine supplier Nisol states in a comment that regular inspections are conducted on the plantations, but cannot explain why the rules are not always followed.
