The police are investigating a suspected sabotage on Gotland. A raw water pump was smashed during the weekend. It's not an unintentional act, says Patrik Johansson, unit manager at Region Gotland, to Aftonbladet.

According to Aftonbladet's sources, the suspected sabotage could have led to the entire island being left without water if it had not been discovered.

Susanne Bjergegaard-Pettersson, Region Gotland's head of water and sewage, confirms to Helagotland that sabotage has occurred, but denies that the entire island would be left without water.

It wouldn't have happened. We have so many water sources and they're not all connected. But if we hadn't discovered it in time, the water would eventually have run out, she says.

Raw Water Pump by Lake

It's about a raw water pump by a lake where some form of violence has been used.

Our system alerted us that a raw water pump in a water source wasn't working. When personnel arrived, they discovered that it was broken, says Susanne Bjergegaard-Pettersson.

The alarm went off at 17.30 on Sunday, according to the police to TT.

"Technicians went to the site and found that someone had opened an electrical cabinet, pulled out a cable, and thereby cut off the power to the pump", the police write.

For Aftonbladet, Bjergegaard-Pettersson also describes how a bronze lid was broken open. Patrik Johansson, unit manager at Region Gotland, tells the newspaper that it's a case of "human interference".

It's not an accidental act, someone has turned it off and pulled out cables.

Tap Water Unaffected

But according to the police, the technicians were able to reconnect the cable and at 21.30 the alarm was restored, which got the pump working again. The police are now conducting a technical investigation at the site and no one has been arrested yet.

The tap water has not been affected by the suspected sabotage, writes Region Gotland in a press release.

The Security Police are not involved in the investigation, but are aware of the case.

What I can say now is that the Security Police are aware that a report has been filed about an incident on Gotland yesterday. This is currently a case handled by the police, says Säpo's press spokesperson Johan Wikström to TT.
